A year ago there was a violent and dramatic jewel heist at the TEFAF art fair here and Maastricht. To date, the jewels haven’t been recovered, the thieves haven’t been caught, and the public was left with a series of baffling videos of the theft. In our new paper, Diāna Bērziņa and I consider the role that the fair’s atmosphere had on the committing of and interpretation of this crime. What looked totally bonkers to the millions of people who watched the heist videos on social media makes perfect sense within the affective space of the art fair.
